The first woman to win the maths Fields Medal has died (metatastic breast cancer). The Fields Medal is the equivalent of a Nobel prize but is awarded to candidates (2-4 every four years) less than 40 years old.

As a teenager Professor Mirzakhani won two gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad. She was the first Iranian woman to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Brilliant mathematician, a daughter, a mother and a wife. By all accounts she was humble in her achievements.

Here is an interview with her.
