You are a critical care physician and find yourself with an unconscious patient with a prominent tattoo at the top of his chest that reads: Do Not Resuscitate. The patient is 70 years old.

In a short video from the Washington Post, a member of the team, Gregory Holt, describes how he  and the team decided and also some improvements that might be made when patient and Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders become separated

This is also reported in correspondence to the New England Journal of Medicine by Gregory Holt, Bianca Armento, Daniel Kett and Kenneth Goodman.

There you can learn more about the patient, his medical history, and the profound problems this case presented to the attending physicians when the law is sometimes not nimble enough to support patient-centered care and respect for patients’ best interests.
