There is only one place on the planet where island foxes live, the Channel Islands, near Southern California.
In the mid-90s they began disappearing, e.g., in 1993, more than 1500 lived on the largest of the islands, Santa Cruz. By 2001, fewer than a hundred remained and the foxes appeared headed for extinction.
NPR's Skunkbear tells the story from near extinction to recovery. It is an incredible story about the effort and ingenuity required to save a species.
