Artist Katie Holten has created a New York City Tree Alphabet.
She has assigned a drawing of a tree from the New York City Parks Department's register of existing native and non-native trees, "as well as species that are to be planted as a result of the changing climate." Holten uses both common and scientific names.
A = Ash
Z = Zelkova serruta (aka Japanese elm, recently used in NYC tree plantings)
You can learn much more about her, her work, see images of kids working with the alphabet, and see Katie Holten's tree alphabet on her lovely webpage.
Be sure to check out her book About Trees.
And here is the Wiki entry on Ms. Holten.
h/t and thanks to Molly.
