Friday Poem

Environmental & Science Education, Poetry, Art & Environment

Ed Hessler

Already it is July 2021, the second day of the month, the 183rd day of the year with more than half the year gone (50.14%) or in seconds 1,5811,200.

Good morning from the Center for Global Environmental Education at Hamline University, St. Paul, MN.

Sunrise is at 5:30 am and the sun sets at 9:02 pm giving us 15h 32m 53s of sunlight and here the heat is on once again.By the way the last sunset at 9:03 pm was June 30. How time flies.

It is National Anisette Day, a herb (Pimpinelia anisum) native to Egypt, cultivated for some 4000 years according to the Wiki entry on anise. Foodimentary provides some interesting facts, the usual lovely photograph and includes food history entries, two of which that seem to me more of the "on this day in ... variety but interesting. Perhaps I missed the food connection.

Quote. "This, for the purpose of this celebration, is the 4th of July. It is the birthday of your National Independence, and of your political freedom. This, to you, is what the Passover was to the emancipated people of God." ―Frederick Douglass

Today's poem is by David Mason, professor emeritus of English, Colorado College.
