I drew attention to a lovely atmospheric effect involving the setting sun recently -- the green ray.

Here is another. It is one I'd never heard of before and it is explained, thank goodness. This sunset mirage is remarkable. The image reminds me of the value of images. Witnessing such an event is one thing but having time to look at it carefully another.

It was posted by the Earth Science Picture of the Day (EPOD) and a good reminder that earth science includes many sciences - the spheres: atmosphere, geosphere, biosphere, cryosphere and hydrosphere.
