Happy New Year! I would like to report clear, blue, sunny skies but the uniform the atmosphere is wearing (and has been) is muted. Gray. But light is returning.

Here are the 2023 Winter Solstice and the January 1, 2024 comparisons.

Winter Solstice December 21, 2023
Sunrise: 7:47 am, Sunset: 4:33 pm, Daylength: 8h 46m  04s

January 1, 2024
Sunrise: 7:50 am, Sunset: 4:41 pm, Daylength: 8h 50m 31s

The first day of the year is a good time to reflect on our origins. Below you will find the simple, almost terse instructions: click play, sit back, to watch a simulation of the evolution of the Universe, just the physical universe, not the biological evolution of our home, Earth.

Some key moments are explained below this Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) video (2 m 35 s)

There is also quite a bit to click on and I found all of them important adding to this story.
